The Office of Civic Engagement develops and promotes programs grounded in Catholic Social Teaching, social justice and solidarity that advance the mission and identity of the university. In particular, the Associate Director for Civic Engagement serves to both maintain and grow mission-focused programming and leadership development opportunities facilitated by the Office of Civic Engagement. The Associate Director oversees co-curricular programs and services that influence faith formation, cultivate servant leadership and promote engagement in the San Antonio community through the lens of the Marianist charism. These opportunities should be rooted in a faith-initiated response to the signs of the times, and guide students in cultivating both personal and professional leadership styles that contribute to social transformation in local, national and global communities. With the goal of forming leaders for the Common Good, the Associate Director is responsible for fostering community outreach efforts and developing opportunities for students to explore and achieve academic and vocational goals. Additionally, this position serves to connect students to a broader Marianist network and supports a campus culture that embodies the Marianist charism. Must be able to work some evenings and weekends and travel occasionally. This position will report to the Director for Civic Engagement.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Design and implement strategic initiatives on campus, with a particular focus on undergraduate students, which cultivate student leadership development rooted in Catholic identity, the Catholic social tradition and the Marianist charism.
  • Through programming, co-curricular opportunities, service-learning and community outreach and engagement efforts, foster the integration of faith and justice into students' personal, professional and vocational development.
  • Maintain and further develop the Marianist Leadership Program to include designing intentional faith reflection and experiential, cross-cultural learning opportunities, encouraging growth in students' leadership skills and abilities and implementing structures for increased responsibility and accountability.
  • With direction from the Director of Civic Engagement, provide Catholic and Marianist student leadership development and faith formation experiences to the wider campus, grounded in Catholic Social Teaching and in partnership with professed and lay Marianist community members.
  • In collaboration with the Director and Assistant Director, enhance current and develop new opportunities for mission-based education and faith formation on campus and in the broader community.
  • Utilize Marianist resources to support the formation of engaged citizens, to include the coordination of the Marianist Universities/AMU Immersion Trip and other joint initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Admission to support undergraduate recruitment efforts through collaborative efforts to include actively fostering relationships with Marianist and other Catholic high schools.
  • Support the development of alumni networks and ongoing engagement of Marianist Leadership Program graduates.
  • Create opportunities for students to engage in dialogue and learning focused on diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Student Life and other campus partners to enrich mission-centered leadership formation of undergraduate students.
  • Responsible for serving as an instructor, providing instructional support, and participating in all associated faculty development programs for the freshmen success course, ND0101 Personal and Academic Development, MLP Cohort
  • Actively participate in university, division, and department-related activities, to include regular staff meetings, events and activities, orientation, new student recruitment activities, commencement, and convocation, etc.
  • Share responsibility of the management of GivePulse database and existing mechanisms for tracking and reporting data/statistics, for both internal and external use.


EDUCATION: Master's degree required; a degree in student development, higher education, counseling, religious studies or related field preferred.


  • Must have at least 3-5 years of related experience in an institution of higher education or the non-profit field.
  • Ideal candidates will have strong interpersonal skills and be able to fully perform each essential duty.
  • Prior experience working with college student and faculty populations, leadership development or other experiential education programs, including demonstrated understanding of Catholic Social Teaching, is required.
  • Proficiency in/knowledge of Spanish language and experience living and/or serving in Latino/Hispanic communities is preferred. Excellent written, interpersonal, presentation, and organizational skills are essential.
  • Ideal candidate will have advanced knowledge of Microsoft word processing, email, scheduling system, spreadsheets and database management.


WORK ENVIRONMENT: Ability to work with students, faculty, and administrators and staff effectively. Position will require daily interaction with individuals and groups of students.  Should have the ability to be flexible in every aspect and able to respond to any situation quickly and adequately.  Must have the ability to balance simultaneous projects without loss of efficiency in a multi-tasked environment.  Be a self-starter, energetic and able to meet deadlines.  Must have proficiency in English and spelling, proficient with technology to support operation, accurate word processing, and ability to operate office equipment, personal computer and utilize office software.
