With minimal supervision from the Department leadership, a Police Telecommunicator / Dispatcher, is an essential University position responsible for supporting the department administration, patrol operations, investigations, parking enforcement officers and emergency management functions of the University Police Department.  As authorized by Texas Statutes, The Police Telecommunicator / Dispatcher serves as an ambassador for the University serving the community in a joint effort, where University Police Department members, students, faculty, staff, visitors and neighbors of St. Mary's University create a safe and secure environment for this higher education community.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:  The communications officer is responsible for handling emergency and non-emergency calls and radio communications for the University Police Department. Job duties include, but not limited to:

  • receiving incoming calls/messages (emergency and non-emergency) and connecting them with appropriate personnel or offices;
  • entering records of calls/messages for service and officer activity into the computer-aided-dispatch & records management system;
  • serve as a resource and support for field units during emergency and non-emergency situations;
  • maintaining records and files; to include but not limited to Computer Aided Dispatch entries,  Master Name files, Wants and Warrants files, crime trespass files, protective orders file, Computer Criminal Histories, TCIC / NCIC / TLETS and CJIS policies and any other computer data entries / files as required; and
  • Operating a Federal/State regulated computer system which accesses law enforcement sensitive records including driver's license, vehicle registration, and criminal warrant and history information. Ability to use Microsoft Office products and ability to use / trained to use departmental Computer Aided Dispatch / Automated Report Management System
  • Handles confidential calls and conversations with discretion and maintains confidentiality
  • Maintains professional attitude and demeanor at all times
  • Communicates via Radio and other Communication Instruments
  • Ability to remain calm, focused and, professional under stressful situations
  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Strong accuracy and attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in speaking, reading and writing English, bilingual is preferred
  • Ability to work shift-work on days, evenings or over-night shifts.  To include weekends and holidays as required.
  • Security Sensitive position – Requires background check

EDUCATION:  High school diploma or GED. 30 + College hours or degree preferred.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION:  Required to possess and/or complete Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) [Previously Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE)] Basic Telecommunicator License, TCIC/NCIC Full Access certification training & the TCOLE Telecommunication Courses. Maintain a TCOLE Telecommunication License is required. Intermediate Telecommunicator License or higher preferred. Must be able to obtain within the TCOLE, Texas Department of Public Safety (TLETS, TCIC/NCIC) guidelines.


The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:

  • Current TCOLE Telecommunicator License,
  • Texas Law Enforcement Terminal Systems (TLETS), and/or Texas Criminal Information Center (TCIC) certifications,
  • Prior public safety communications experience.
  • Experience working at an institution of higher education

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to Police Lieutenant.  Operates in a highly autonomous manner with minimum supervision.
