St. Mary's University is seeking a Director of Athletics who will exercise servant leadership within the Athletics Department and across the campus. The Director must be committed to the mission of St. Mary's as a Catholic and Marianist university, one that values the education, and ethical and spiritual formation of our student-athletes. The Director will lead a team of staff and coaches in prioritizing a holistic approach to education and character formation, as well as competitive team success.


The Athletics Director is responsible for overseeing the University's programs for intercollegiate and club sports, as well as athletics facilities. The Director plays a major role in fundraising to support the current and future needs of the Athletics program. Working in collaboration with the Office of University Advancement, the Director is responsible for developing relationships and soliciting gifts from benefactors, as well as for promoting alumni relations among former student-athletes of the University.


The Athletics Director is expected to provide leadership that embraces the culture of St. Mary's as a Catholic and Marianist university and that places its programs intercollegiate sports and club sports within the context of the characteristics of Marianist education. The Director is expected to provide the leadership necessary to achieve and maintain a successful athletics program, ensure compliance with all governing authorities, and establish a strong and positive presence at the local, regional and national levels.


The Athletics Director reports to the President, is a member of the President's Leadership Council, and works collaboratively with the Vice President for University Advancement and Vice Provosts for Student Development and Enrollment Management, as well as with other members of the University's leadership team. The Athletics Director chairs the Athletics Cabinet and is a member of the Athletics administrative/leadership team. The position is full-time, 12 months a year.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Support the Catholic and Marianist identity of the University and work collaboratively to evidence the characteristics of Marianist education in all aspects of the department's operations
  • Oversee all aspects of the Athletics Department, which include intercollegiate sports, club sports and athletics facilities
  • Advance the University's academic excellence by recruiting, retaining and graduating quality student-athletes
  • Dedicate significant time and effort to fundraising, including the coordination and facilitation of fundraising and alumni relations activities for athletics programs and facilities
  • Develop, implement and maintain orientation, mentoring and educational programming for departmental administration, staff, coaches, and students
  • Develop, implement and maintain departmental policies and team regulations that are consistent with the University and the characteristics of Marianist education
  • Maintain and promote a culture of fairness, respect, honesty, discipline, team work and competitiveness within the Athletics Department
  • Advance the University's winning traditions, academically and athletically, with student-athletes and teams that are talented and competitive at the NCAA Division II level
  • Develop and implement programs that promote the University as a whole, especially as they relate to integrating student-athletes with other students and promoting campus spirit
  • Develop and implement Department policies and ensure compliance with all federal and state laws and regulations; NCAA and division regulations; policies and best practices; and University regulations and policies
  • Oversee the coordination of all intercollegiate athletic events held in St. Mary's athletics facilities
  • Oversee finances and budgets related to the Athletics Department and facilities
  • Oversee athletic facilities operations in partnership with Facilities Administration
  • Recruit, train, supervise and conduct annual performance evaluations for staff and coaches in the Athletics Department
  • Develop and implement a strategic plan for the Department, to include annual goals and objectives for the Department, and complete end-of-the year progress reports
  • Coordinate and facilitate communications, marketing and utilization plans for the athletics sports facilities in collaboration with University Communications and Facilities Administration
  • Represent the University at NCAA and Conference meetings
  • Perform additional duties as assigned



  • Minimum of five to eight years of relevant administrative/supervisory experience in intercollegiate or professional athletics required, preferably at NCAA Division II or III institutions. Experience at a Catholic or other faith-based university preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in athletics fundraising required
  • Experience in budget oversight and development required
  • Knowledge of NCAA compliance regulations required
  • Experience in facilities administration is preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills required
  • Proficient with using technology Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook required


EDUCATION:  Bachelor's degree required; master's degree preferred
