The Communications Coordinator is responsible for advancing and promoting awareness about the University primarily through a variety of digital and printed communications, including web site content, social media, video, photography, and magazine and newsletter articles. The Coordinator integrates printed content with electronic communications, primarily the website and social media, in order to effectively reach target audiences: prospective students, current students, faculty and staff, alumni and the general public.


The Communications Coordinator collaborates with other University Communications staff members, as well as administration, faculty and staff, to learn about activities and programs on campus to ensure that all communications accurately project and support the University's strategic goals, mission and brand.


The Communications Coordinator reports to the Director of University Communications.



  • Writes for the Gold & Blue magazine, electronic newsletters, the University website, and other areas and publications as needed, ensuring that messages are well crafted, engaging and in accordance with University style guidelines
  • Assists with managing communications projects with multiple components and interdependent pieces, such as event promotions that may require printed invitations, programs, advertisements, signage, calendar listings, web content, and social media promotion
  • Seeks opportunities to utilize video in interesting and innovative ways
  • Works with University clients to determine project needs, particularly related to video and photography; ensures the quality of the work and style is line with University expectations; uses appropriate software to develop finished project and recommends appropriate integrated uses for the product
  • Ensures the integration of printed and electronic communications with online content on the University's website, campus calendar and social media presences
  • Writes web content using an online content management system
  • Works with University clients to assist with developing engaging and appropriate web content for programs, schools and faculty pages on the University website
  • Serve as a resource for University-wide content managers and program directors/deans to ensure website content meets their needs and overall quality expectations
  • Works closely as needed with Media Relations and Social Media Director for social media work; works closely with Marketing Communications Director as needed on printed publications, such as posters, brochures, programs, etc.
  • Develops relationships with key University officials, faculty, staff and students to identify new and interesting ways to tell the St. Mary's story
  • Assists other members of University Communications as needed
  • Participates in professional activities within and outside the University community
  • Identifies new, enhanced and innovative methods of communicating with target audiences
  • Photographs events for documentarian purposes to be used in printed and electronic pieces, as needed
  • Contributes to the overall advancement of Office of University Communications projects and initiatives
  • Other duties as assigned


EDUCATION:  Bachelor's degree in communications or related field



  • A minimum of two to five years professional experience in communications
  • Excellent writing, editing, proofreading, analytical, organizational, grammar and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent time-management and project-management skills
  • Knowledgeable of best practices in web writing to keep web content up-to-date, accurate and engaging; proficient in      WordPress and other content management solutions, including basic HTML, to make web edits
  • Preferred proficiency in: Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, WordPress, Final Cut Pro or similar video editing software
  • Knowledge of the relation between Web, social media and print communications
  • Knowledge of photography and videography
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, administrators, and students, as well as fellow University      Communications team members
  • Writing samples will be required
