The primary responsibility of the stockroom manager/laboratory supervisor is to ensure materials for all laboratory courses in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry are prepared and ready by the start of the respective laboratory period under the instructions of the faculty. The stockroom manager will also supervise work-study students who will assist in these duties. Responsibilities will also include maintaining inventory of the chemical stockroom, ordering chemicals and equipment, and maintaining proper safety records and practices within the department. The ideal candidate will also have knowledge of the use and maintenance of modern chemical instrumentation such as Gas Chromatography / Mass Spectroscopy, FTIR, UV-Vis Spectroscopy, and Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Setting up for teaching demonstrations and laboratories each week, which will include the mixing of appropriate solutions, selecting proper glassware and equipment following written protocols.
  • Monitor and maintain college work-study student's hours and work schedules ensuring time sheets are filed with the financial aid office; verify that college work-study students do not work excess hours relative to their financial aid awards.
  • Contacting technicians or related personnel for the maintenance and repair of laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
  • Monitor and maintain laboratory inventory list of chemicals and consumables (glassware, pipets, etc.) and ensure that all materials are in stock and reorder when necessary.
  • Ensure proper storage of all chemicals.
  • Order supplies (chemicals and consumables) as needed for both course-related and research-related activities. In particular, common/routine supplies need to be monitored on a regular basis.
  • Maintain accurate records of purchase orders, equipment maintenance, and other items related to the operation of the laboratories such as procedures, manuals, etc.
  • Implement and monitor laboratory safety regulations (OSHA, EPA, etc.) and ensure that college work-study students are properly trained in safety procedures.
  • Train college work-study and research students in safety procedures on a per-semester basis.
  • Maintain safety data sheets (SDS) and make accessible to faculty and staff as needed.
  • Manage the proper storage and timely disposal of chemical waste.
  • Ensure that laboratory materials are properly returned following laboratories. This includes making sure that college work-study students wash and clean laboratory glassware, plasticware, and other items.
  • Consult with Physical Plant on any problems that need immediate attention.
  • Supervise end of the semester cleaning and disposal of items in the stockroom.
  • Secure 3rd floor of Garni Hall when leaving building at 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.



  • Must have excellent communication skills and the ability to work with a diverse student population in a supportive manner.
  • Requires very strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Word, Excel, email computer skills.


EDUCATION: Stockroom manager/laboratory supervisor must have either a B.S. or a B.A. degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology or related field.
