Competitive Pay; Work Schedule is Saturday/Sunday - Approximately 15-20hrs

With minimal supervision from the Department leadership, a Police Telecommunicator / Dispatcher, is an essential University position responsible for supporting the department administration, patrol operations, investigations, parking enforcement officers and emergency management functions of the University Police Department. As authorized by Texas Statutes, The Police Telecommunicator / Dispatcher serves as an ambassador for the University serving the community in a joint effort, where University Police Department members, students, faculty, staff, visitors and neighbors of St. Mary's University create a safe and secure environment for this higher education community.


  • Receives incoming calls/messages (emergency and non-emergency) and connects them with appropriate personnel or offices;
  • Enters records of calls/messages for service and officer activity into the computer-aided-dispatch & records management system;
  • Serves as a resource and support for field units during emergency and non-emergency situations;
  • Maintains records and files to include but not limited to computer aided dispatch entries, master name files, Wants and Warrants files, crime trespass files, protective orders file, computer criminal histories, TCIC/NCIC/TLETS and CJIS policies and any other computer data entries/files as required;
  • Operates a federal/state regulated computer system which accesses law enforcement sensitive records including driver's license, vehicle registration, and criminal warrant and history information;
  • Handles confidential calls and conversations with discretion and maintains confidentiality;
  • Maintains professional attitude and demeanor at all times;
  • Communicates via radio and other communication instruments;
  • Performs other duties as assigned


  • High School Diploma or GED required. 30+ college hours or Associate's degree preferred.
  • Prior public safety communications experience is highly desirable; Experience working at an institution of higher education preferable.
  • Must possess or have ability to complete and maintain Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Basic Telecommunicator License, TCIC/NCIC Full Access certification training & the TCOLE Telecommunication Courses. Intermediate Telecommunicator License or higher preferred. Texas Law Enforcement Terminal Systems (TLETS), and/or Texas Criminal Information Center (TCIC) certifications preferred.
  • Must have valid driver's license, motor vehicle liability insurance and personal injury insurance; or have a self-reliant source of transportation to conduct business on a daily basis
  • Must clear and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance including No criminal arrests over a class B misdemeanor and/ or Family Violence conviction.
  • Must possess an understanding of higher education and sensitivity to the customer service/community policing law enforcement model as it relates to an educational setting.
  • Must have ability to respond professionally to inquiries, concerns and, complaints from various constituencies of the University; Ability to remain calm, focused and, professional under stressful situations
  • Must have a high ethical standards and a strong sense of confidentiality; ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines; thrive in a complex work environment; displays solid problem solving and interpersonal skills; works well independently and as part of a team.
  • Must have strong self-judgment abilities to assist in the preparation of department personnel policy information; Use discretion to complete work assignments; Initiative is frequently required to complete work assignments; ability to make decisions regarding policy interpretation and individual work priorities
  • Must have the ability to demonstrate a capacity for leadership, and the commitment to work collaboratively with a diverse and dynamic community.
  • Must have ability to accept and support the Universities Guiding Principles, as well as the Vision, Mission, Values and Goals of the University and Police Department.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong public relations and customer service skills with an ability to implement diplomacy and discretion at all times; an ability to work effectively with communities across the university; Must be able to be understood clearly on the telephone & radio transmissions
  • Must Possess positive interpersonal communication skills; Attitude must be proactive, customer service oriented with a system's thinking approach; Creativity and positive learning skills are important.
  • Must have the ability to demonstrate advanced skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Must be able to work holidays, weekends, shifts (Day, Evening, Nights) based upon University/ Department needs; Mandatory over-time or schedule adjustment based upon Department needs is possible;
  • Must be available for emergency recall back to duty at a moment's notice in the event of a declared emergency incident impacting the University's operation and/or special events
  • Bilingual Preferred (English/Spanish with the ability to understand and to make one's self understood to Spanish speaking individuals)


  • Working conditions are in an office environment and university campus setting. Must be able to move across the university campus to conduct day to day business.
  • While performing this role, the employee will be regularly required to sit, walk, and stand; talk and hear, both in person and by telephone; and use hands repetitively to operate standard office equipment; and occasionally required to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Frequently communicates with others using approved technological resources; must be able to exchange accurate information through designated systems within a timely manner.
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery.
