St. Mary's University, a private, four-year Catholic Marianist University located in San Antonio, Texas invites applications for Assistant Professor tenure-track - Director of Jazz Studies in the Department of Music beginning Fall 2023. The successful candidate's responsibilities include directing the St. Mary's University Jazz Orchestra and the Rattler Pep Band; teaching Music Theory and Aural Skills courses and applied music as needed; actively recruiting music students through outreach and recruitment events; and establishing a strong regional, and national reputation as a jazz artist, director, and teacher.

Additional responsibilities will include serving on departmental, collegiate, and professional committees, as well as planning and leading outreach programs with the purpose of continued engagement with area school districts. Additional duties may be assigned to accentuate the candidate's areas of expertise in consultation with the Department of Music Chair.

The ideal candidate will have an innovative and student-focused vision and approach for a collegiate jazz program, and a proven track record of successful artistic engagement with the broader community. Additionally, the successful candidate will assist/participate/coordinate, along with the Chair of the Department of Music, the annual Fiesta Jazz Festival, Summer Band Camp, and other department of music activities.

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctoral Degree in Music
  • Demonstrated accomplishment as a jazz performer
  • Evidence of creative activity and achievement in collegiate and/or professional jazz band directing
  • Demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and learning at the university level or equivalent.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Enthusiasm, vision, and capability to further build the jazz and instrumental area
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching, as demonstrated through candidate CV and submitted materials
  • Evidence of successful student recruitment
  • Experience working with secondary school level students: ensemble directing, workshops, clinics, etc.
  • Ability to contribute effectively to an inclusive working and learning environment
  • Evidence of university and community collaboration
  • Ability to work with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and/or socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
