The student loan specialist is responsible for assisting with the process of awarding, certifying, and reconciling federal and private loans and applying monies to student accounts. This position will also be available to answer questions and work closely with campus partners in ensuring students accounts are credited timely and efficiently.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reviews and updates student accounts in Student Information System (Banner) to ensure account is correctly adjusted.
  • Imports and processes Federal loans using the electronic data exchange
  • Monitors and verifies each student's eligibility for a loan on the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS)
  • Resolves loan request discrepancies and ensure the accuracy of information transmitted to and from the U.S. Department of Education remains in compliance with federal student eligibility and needs analysis requirements
  • Enters loan amounts and ensures they are disbursed to student accounts and balances updated.
  • Adjusts student financial aid awards in a timely manner to have accurate records.
  • Assists in processing summer loans for students and monitors accounts.
  • Assists in the monthly and annual reconciliation of loan programs.
  • Responds to inquiries in person, by email and by phone from students and parents regarding financial aid and loan information, accurately assess their needs and provides appropriate responses.
  • Provides appropriate forms and refers callers to appropriate departments.
  • Responds to questions regarding programs, billing, financial aid, payment deadlines, and tuition rates.
  • Makes follow-up calls to students and parents as needed.
  • Participates in the implementation and administration of financial aid policies and procedures.
  • Stays current on financial aid regulations and processing.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma/GED, 2 years of college level coursework or Associates Degree preferred
  • 2 years of financial aid, loan processing, or similar work experience
  • Experience with Ellucian Banner, Argos software, Banner Document Management System (BDMS) or similar preferred
  • Must clear and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
  • Must have valid driver's license, motor vehicle liability insurance and personal injury insurance; or have a self-reliant source of transportation to conduct business on a daily basis
  • Must be able to work extended hours or weekends during peak times and for special programs, projects, or events.
  • Must have the ability to demonstrate strong proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); experience with virtual meeting platforms such as zoom, teams or similar ;
  • Must have a high attention to detail and be able to organize workflow, coordinate activities, balance simultaneous projects without loss of efficiency in a multi-tasked environment, and manage multiple priorities to meet deadlines.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong public relations and customer service skills with an ability to implement diplomacy and discretion at all times; ability to work effectively with communities across the university.
  • Ability to comply with all federal, state and private regulations in awarding and processing of student loans including understanding borrower-based year and scheduled academic year loan processing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a team player in a fast-paced, environment to efficiently and effectively solve problems, and initiate and implement projects

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Working conditions are in an office environment and university campus setting. Must be able to move across the university campus to conduct day to day business.
  • While performing this role, the employee will be regularly required to sit, walk, and stand; talk and hear, both in person and by telephone; and use hands repetitively to operate standard office equipment; and occasionally required to lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Frequently communicates with others using approved technological resources; must be able to exchange accurate information through designated systems within a timely manner.
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery.
