The Assistant Dean of the Office of Law Student Admissions and Recruitment reports to the Dean of the Law School and is responsible for all aspects of the law school's recruitment, admissions, and scholarship programs, providing the strategic vision, leadership and management necessary to enroll a highly qualified and motivated student body for the Law School's J.D. program. As a member of the law school's senior management team, key responsibilities include serving as the law school's chief admissions and scholarship officer; developing and implementing competitive marketing and recruitment strategies to strengthen the academic quality and diversity of the student body; and managing new enrollment to the J.D. program. The Assistant Dean also must utilize a data-informed, comprehensive approach to integrate recruitment and marketing strategies with developing communications and social networking technologies and award all scholarships by strategically leveraging available resources to meet enrollment goals and to increase academic strength.

 The Assistant Dean of the Office of Law Student Admissions and Recruitment must also have a commitment to leadership in a Catholic and Marianist institution, which fosters quality education in a family spirit; to pursue service, justice and peace and prepare for adaptation and change, while encouraging each person in their own way in their formation in faith.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Work with senior leadership to understand and support institutional goals for enrollment, developing strategic plans to meet those goals.
  • Develop the strategic plan for scholarship allocation, in coordination with budget leadership, dean, and law school leadership using data and historical information.
  • Develop the annual admissions plan for the JD program.
  • Oversee admissions processes and procedures and provide leadership in all areas.
  • Coordinate with the Faculty Admissions Committee and maintain communication with the Chair of the Committee.
  • Develop and design the online application, marketing materials, and publications and guides.
  • Evaluate and select students for the program including reading/reviewing applications and making final decisions on admission.
  • Analyze and report on admissions statistics throughout admissions cycle and in annual reports to the dean, senior leadership, and faculty.
  • Counsel prospective applicants regarding admissions requirements, degree program differences, and opportunities to study at St. Mary's.
  • Oversee the maintenance of data and ensure the most up-to-date methods are strategically employed.
  • Manage the relationships with partner universities and institutions who produce law school students.
  • Maintain high level of expertise in use of ACES and campus systems.
  • Stay updated on most current recruitment techniques and lead the development of communications strategies and social media strategies.
  • Review and update annually automated electronic communications with applicants and admits (including electronic notification of admission).
  • Develop and maintain relationships with prospective students, pre-law advisors, colleagues in law admissions, and members of all St. Mary's constituent populations.
  • Work closely with the Dean, senior leadership, and others to achieve recruitment and admissions goals.
  • Build on existing ties between faculty, students, alumni, undergraduate institutions, and other entities to help identify and recruit potential students and to strengthen overall relationships between undergraduate institutions and the law school.
  • Connect with counterparts from other law schools and education partners to share leads, ideas, and best practices.
  • Provide leadership, direction, and role-modeling to professional and support staff.
  • Lead in creating an atmosphere conducive to teamwork that is based on mutual respect for each other as well as respect for colleagues throughout the law school and the university.
  • Make decisions on performance, salary actions, hiring decisions, and other human resources related issues of managed staff.
  • Administer the budget for the office.



  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in law school admissions work.
  • Experience in a supervisory role in admissions preferred.
  • The ability to maintain an active travel schedule throughout the United States.
  • Knowledge of ACES and Banner.
  • Experience designing a competitive recruitment program.
  • Experience managing staff members from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience working with a student population drawn from diverse backgrounds.
  • A proven record of developing creative marketing strategies.
  • Experience with public speaking, particularly presenting to large groups.
  • A commitment to creating a culture of teamwork and customer service.
  • Must clear and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance


PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing this role, the employee will be regularly required to sit, walk, and stand; talk and hear, both in person and by telephone; and use hands repetitively to operate standard office equipment; and occasionally required to lift up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
