The Director of Tennis is a key member of the coaching team, who provides leadership and vision within the Athletics Department, as well as among the student athletes. This person reports to the Athletics Director and is responsible for various aspects of the program, such as recruiting, scheduling opponents, fundraising, strength & conditioning, developing annual service/engagement projects for student-athletes, planning and preparation for matches and practices, mentoring and evaluating student-athletes, academic monitoring, and other duties as assigned. The position is required to abide by the rules and regulations established by St. Mary's University, the Lone Star Conference and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). In addition, this person must be committed to the education Mission of the University.



  • Teach and instruct the technical and motivational aspects of the sport to all team members.
  • Develop, coordinate and supervise practice and training of all team members (student-athletes).
  • Recruit highly competitive individuals while supporting the development of each student-athlete spiritually, academically, physically and socially.
  • Observe all St. Mary's University, Lone Star Conference, and NCAA policies and requirements.
  • Interact with university departments.
  • Travel with both teams (evening and weekend travel required).

Other Duties:

  • Prepare, evaluate and maintain all administrative and certification data for each student-athlete in Men's & Women's Tennis, including the scheduling of games, practices and academic counseling of each student.
  • Raise funds to enhance the Men's & Women's Tennis budget.
  • Maintain the budget for both the Men's & Women's Tennis programs.
  • Oversee an Assistant Coach and two graduate assistants (one for each program).
  • Assist with other athletic department duties as needed.


EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree preferred or five years of experience in the field of tennis is acceptable experience substitution.


EXPERIENCE: Requires excellent speaking, writing and basic computer skills. Ability to articulate ideas and strategies. Experience in coaching tennis.  


PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing this role, the employee will be regularly required to sit, walk, and stand; talk and hear, both in person and by telephone; and use hands repetitively to operate standard office equipment; and occasionally required to lift up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
